Hi everyone! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Since I’ve already posted my overall New Year’s Resolutions (you can see that post here), I thought I’d take today to go more in depth with my blogging goals for 2017! Recently I’ve started to take my blog a lot more seriously and would really like to see it grow and improve over the course of the new year.
I thought you guys might be interested in my blogging goals, for some ideas on creating your own goals for the new year, or for seeing the current status of my blog and seeing how it progresses! Please, please, PLEASE feel extremely free to give me suggestions for how I can grow or how I can even create a clearer track towards my goals. Another reason I wanted to share this post is so that I can later update you on how these goals are going, because you guys are all definitely part of the ride. I can’t thank you guys enough for your continued support as I experiment with how I want this blog to function and how the website as a whole works. You all are the best!
FIRST – HOW I CREATED MY BLOGGING GOALS
I feel this section of the post might be the most useful for you in terms of practicality. I read somewhere that the best way to create an action map towards a goal is to start from the end and work backwards! So, this is what I did regarding my blog. I started with what I wanted my blog to look like in December 2017. Then I went backwards month by month creating smaller and smaller goals that would ultimately lead to December’s goals. I found this to be super helpful in figuring out what it actually takes to achieve this, and in deciding if I was even giving myself a realistic amount of time for my goals.
TIMELINE OF MY GOALS
My goal by the end of January is to have 500 readers per month. I know this sounds like a SUPER small amount especially compared to many of your blogs, but my blog is LITERALLY about as new as it gets, in terms of actually taking it seriously and wanting to grow my audience.
Also, I wanted to give myself as much time as humanly possible to achieve this goal because I do get discouraged very easily, so I figured giving myself a pretty small starter goal would hopefully prevent any major disappointment. ALSO, while this is a small amount of readers per month, getting to this point will require consistency on my part, which is definitely something I need to work on. That is why this is my primary January goal!
Another big goal of mine is to improve my blog photography. I rarely take any of my own photos because the lighting at my parent’s house (where I often am) is terrible, and I don’t have a fancy camera. However, the lighting at my apartment is pretty fantastic – I just need to learn how to utilize my iPhone to the best of my ability and get creative!
February through April-
I plan on, of course, still increasing my following and monthly readers. But through these months, I have three main goals:
- Increase/enhance my mailing list- my mailing list is in the SUPER beginner stages right now. I currently use Mailchimp but since I am new to it, I find it a bit confusing. This is something I want to work on. I also want to do more to promote joining my mailing list and enhance my newsletter. I want it to be something of genuine interest to my readers and I want it to be an opportunity for us to interact.
- Swap guest posts- I’ve never done a guest post before and I would really like to. First of all, I think it would be great to get involved in another blog, and of course it would also be beneficial for getting my blog’s name out there. I’d also love to have one or two people guest post for me.
- Get involved in affiliate programs- I recently applied to Amazon’s affiliate program. Like, extremely recently, so I can’t really say I’m fully involved in the program as of now. But I want to become better at working with affiliate sales and figuring out how this can best benefit my readers rather than myself (because I want to be trustworthy more than anything else and not make some dimes off of cheap sales pitches).
Since these goals don’t really need to go in any order, I have listed them over a three month period. If anyone has any suggestions for learning Mailchimp or would like to swap guest posts, PLEASE let me know in the comments!
May through July-
My goal for these months is basically to continue improving the things I’ve mentioned above. I want to continue to guest post, work with my subscribers, and increase my audience.
Something I also have listed, however, is to boost my freebies with my mailing list – right now I am offering a free PDF file of the first 20/20 Magazine, which I wrote for and designed with a small group of other bloggers. This is obviously something I will want to update at some point. Hopefully this will be something I work on before summertime; but to be honest, it is just not on the top of my list for now. Maybe this will change. Otherwise, I have this listed during the summer months so that I remember to at least do it at some point.
What I’m thinking for future freebies is offering a library of material relevant to you guys, whether that be in the form of printables, never-before-seen posts, videos, etc. I just know that I would later like to be able to offer you all a library of material rather than just one copy of my magazine.
August through October-
I want to focus more on making sure I have pillar posts for my blog – posts that essentially define what my blog is and also are extremely helpful for you all. Again, this is something I would rather do earlier on in 2017. But, if it just doesn’t happen beforehand, I have it listed here so that it at least happens at some point during the year. Maybe it will accidentally happen at some point. Who knows.
Another goal for these months is to try my hand at sponsored posts. I’m not sure as of now how to start getting involved with this but I will probably try reaching out to some sort of small boutique or product brand and see how it goes!
November through December-
Essentially, my goals for these months is to update, update, update – my newsletter, my posts, my photos, my social media, etc. I want to be more engaging on ALL platforms I use and continue trying to make some revenue from my blog. This way, my blog can stay fresh and organized for the beginning of 2018!
MAN! This post feels good to get out there. Now that I’ve written this into a cohesive format rather than a messy list covered in scribbles, I am feeling ready to take on the year with my blog. I plan to periodically update you all on how these goals are going – possibly monthly, or quarterly? I’m not quite sure (let me know what you think might work best in the comments!). I hope this post helped you get an idea of where my blog is and where I’d like it to go. If you’re a blogger, maybe this give you some inspiration for your own timeline of goals!
Anyways, HAPPY 2017!!! I hope this year brings all of us a ton of joy and positive change.
I’ll talk to you all very soon! I love you!
