I find it kind of funny how popular morning routine blog posts and videos are. Like, for the most part, they just involve getting coffee and doing something relaxing and maybe exercising. And that’s it. But I love them, too.
In fact, this post is an updated morning routine. You can see last year’s here!
So why do we eat these up?
I think that, for the most part, people gravitate towards morning routines because we all kind of stumble in our morning routines a bit, and we all look to other people’s in an attempt to find ways to improve our own.
I think that most of us agree that our mornings set us up for the rest of the day, so we are always striving to find ways to make our mornings perfect.
I want to give you a general idea of how I run my morning routine during the summertime, because honestly it’s not all that perfect and productive, I don’t always wake up at the crack of dawn, and sometimes I wake up super grumpy. That’s life.
So, here is my morning routine, based on the truth, but also what you want to hear.
After that, I’d like to give you a quick rundown of how THIS morning is going (it’s currently noon as I write this).
MY SUMMER MORNING ROUTINE: WHEN THE SUN IS SHINING AND ALL GOES ACCORDING TO PLAN
I wake up. I try to do a little bit of stretching because that is important, but sometimes I totally forget because I am immediately thinking about the coffee in the kitchen downstairs. I force myself to drink a full water bottle before making said coffee.
I make said coffee. It is delicious and brightens my mood without fail. This is also when I let the dogs outside, open a window, and grab my book.
By now I am on the couch reading, with the dogs on the couch with me. This is my favorite part of the day, because I love coffee, I love reading, and I love my dogs. I’m the only one ever awake in my house at this point so it’s peaceful and perfect.
My coffee is usually gone now and I grab a bite to eat. Usually something simple like toast and strawberries, or even just a granola bar. I’m usually still the only one awake in the house (my family is all night owls) so I don’t want to wake everyone up by making a big breakfast.
I usually eat my breakfast while watching YouTube or reading blog posts.
I can be productive now that I have had my coffee and breakfast. I hop on Twitter and check my blog stats. I upload a post if I have one ready, or read more blogs and write a post.
It’s simple, very simple. This is usually how my mornings go. Not always.
For example, this morning.
There really wasn’t anything catastrophically wrong with this morning, but I feel inclined to share with you how this not-so-great morning went, for the sake of honesty and not pretending my morning routine is perfect at all.
So without further adieu:
MY SUMMER MORNING ROUTINE: THIS MORNING
Alarm starts going off. It was set for later in the morning today because I stayed up too late watching The Office. I have no desire to be awake. Snooze.
Okay. Now I will wake up. I sit up in bed and actually take the time to stretch.
I let the dogs out and feel first-hand how sweltering hot it is outside. As many of you know I just spent 6 weeks camping in the savannas of east Africa in the middle of summer and let me tell you, it is hot in Indiana right now. Good lord.
I begin making my coffee. I’m excited for the coffee, but also feeling grumpy that I am making hot coffee when it is so bloody hot out.
Hot coffee is made and I am SWEATING it is so hot in the house. I look for my computer equipment to take to the basement where it’s much cooler. Have some trouble finding everything I need. Still very hot. A few F-bombs thrown around.
Sitting in the cool basement with my hot coffee, grumpy that I am sweaty because I have somewhere to be in a few hours. I listen to a podcast and just let myself relax. I cheer up a little.
Podcast ends. I am feeling better and I have drank my coffee. I start writing this blog post, which was supposed to be PUBLISHED at 11 AM today. But here I am, just starting it. It’s now about 12:30 PM and here I am, still writing it.
So, the moral of the story is probably: don’t hit snooze and don’t spend your summer in Indiana.
I’m feeling much better, really – except I am still in the basement and it’s probably only more hot outside.
I didn’t mean for this post to turn into me complaining about the weather. Hahaha.
But, compare this with my Last Year’s Summer Morning Routine. It looks a lot different, but that’s because there is always room for improvement, and room for change.
I just want to share that while I do have a set morning routine that I am usually able to follow, things don’t always go according to plan! Some mornings just don’t go the way you want them to, and that shouldn’t have to set the tone for the rest of the day. I still managed to pump out this blog post, and sure, it’s going up late – but it’s going up!
I say it a lot, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
Life isn’t always perfect, and your morning routine isn’t always on track. But you can always pick yourself back up.
